Hsinpu is home to the largest Yi-min temple in Taiwan. What also makes this place special are two large mounds behind the temple which are adorned with flowers and trees. It is a beautiful space to sit, pray, and think.

The history of those mounds was an inspiration to me. It was hundreds of years ago when a civil war broke out here, and two-hundred-forty men from the nearby village died defending their homes and families.

Following such a tragedy, it was not immediately clear where they should all be buried. And so the bodies of the deceased were loaded into carts, and water buffalo were used to haul the bodies into the countryside.

Accompanied by villagers and the village priest, the water buffalo suddenly came to an abrupt stop and refused to walk further. Noticing this odd behavior, the priest threw two wooden crescent-shaped blocks to the ground, to “bua buei” three times. Each throw confirmed the actions of the animals as a sign that this was the place for the burial.

It is sad to learn that the second mound belongs to a future generation, when the act of war once again stole the lives of one-hundred men from this village. The second mound is a tragic commemoration not only to those lives lost, but also to the inability of humanity to learn from the past and to cease hostilities against one another.

I wrote this song while walking among those mounds. Later, when I was producing the song, I hoped to have some of my lyrics translated into Hakka, and so I asked my dear friend Chen Yong-Tao to translate some lyrics for me to sing.

But he did so much more…

He went to a local recording studio and recorded what he believed was a demo of the new Hakka lyrics. When I listened to what he had recorded, I could not consider this to be a demo at all. I placed his original recording in the very end of the song, representing the voice of those who have passed on, telling us not to worry. They will return.

Here we say goodbye(我们在此别离)
This is where I'll lay your body down(我将让你在此栖息)
Where the beasts of burden testify(驮尸的牛群就是证据)
They have come to rest on hallowed ground

This is where we say goodbye

All around the people cry

How could so many people die(奈何伤亡如是)
Two-hundred-forty sacrificed (两佰四十名牺牲者赴死)
And this is where I realize(在此令我领悟)

Here we say goodbye
This is where I'll lay your body down (我将让你在此栖息)
Where the beasts of burden testify
They have come to rest on hallowed ground

This is where we say goodbye(在这别离之地)

All around the children cry
Saying 'why did daddy have to die' (为何父亲必须踏上死亡征途)
With trembling hands and tearful eyes(双手颤抖 眼含泪珠)
This is where I realize(我在此领悟)

But few would heed this bloody tale
When the sons of sons whose fathers fell(当战祸再起 父兄再度赴义)
Put one-hundred more upon the trail
To the place the fallen dwell(就在先人丧生之地)

This is where we say goodbye(在这别离之地)
